For Jo O’Connor moving to Hurstpierpoint represented a key milestone in her family’s life. But the shift began to happen a little earlier, when she jacked in her ‘high flyer’ career in order to pursue a lifelong ambition to run her own business.
Five years ago Jo was Chief Executive Officer of an international retail corporation, a role she was proud to have achieved having worked for 30 years in the sector, working her way up from product buyer at Levi Strauss. But, for her, it was time to leave the fast-paced corporate life in London in order to take on a new challenge and find the perfect home for her family.
They moved away from Surrey in 2013, as Jo was looking for a suitable business to run, and moved to Wivelsfield. “I had always dreamt of having my own business,” Jo commented, “and the personal freedom that comes with it. The boardroom was no easy place to work and the pressure was enormous and constant. In truth, I had had enough of being bossed around!”
It was only as Jo got into her 50s that she felt she had the confidence to try something totally different. She soon located Battle House of Flowers, based in Battle; a florist with a reputation for good flowers but in need of some help.
